When a person is on the journey to parenthood, whether it’s their first or not, an major shift happens. Through a ceremony like the Mother Blessing, we celebrate this season of change. While we may not be able to offer a traditional baby shower during the coronavirus pandemic, we are so thrilled to be offering a virtual Mother Blessing ceremony - a uniquely bespoke experience to help celebrate this special season of life.
What is a mother blessing?
A mother blessing is a special event featuring a series of rituals that give lots of TLC to the birthing person. Her closest friends and family gather (from all over the world) to celebrate and honour her, as she enjoys pampering through a herbal foot bath and is anointed with a floral crown. This experience focuses on the emotional and spiritual growth that comes with motherhood, as opposed to the material focus that comes along with a traditional baby shower. While the idea of accepting attention and sharing in a spiritual ceremony with your friends and family might be uncomfortable, giving your loved ones the opportunity to pledge their support even when they cannot be physically there is a very transformative experience.
Where does this tradition come from?
This ceremony is inspired by the traditional Dine Navajo ‘Blessing Way.’ This tradition honoured many different periods of transition in First Nation culture - motherhood being one of the most sacred of all. We call our version the Mother Blessing, rather than recreating the Blessing Way, in order to appreciate the roots of this cultural tradition rather than appropriate.
How does it work virtually?
Before we begin, we ask the partner prepares the herbal foot bath to be enjoyed while the virtual event goes on. In the virtual platform, activities include: participants sharing of poems/prayers/wisdom for the mama-to-be; ceremonial foot bath; cord cutting ceremony (each participant ties a string around their wrist to be cut when labour begins to help the mother let go); and explanation of candle ceremony (each participant lights a candle when labour begins to share their support & love). Afterwards, we can customize the event to feature your bespoke needs, such as opening of gifts or casual conversation.
